SANTA MARIA, Santa Barbara County — October 23, 2026. Santa Maria Regional Transit (SMRT) announced a substantial network update for July 1, 2026, responding to changed travel patterns and reported ridership growth. Its June announcement said ridership was tracking roughly 10% higher than the previous year, and introduced service revisions intended to improve neighborhood and regional travel.
A new route along West Main and Blosser
According to the city’s June 3 news release, Route 14 was scheduled to begin service July 1, connecting areas along West Main Street and Blosser Road on a stated 60-minute frequency. That is the city’s published rollout plan, not a live vehicle-location check. Always verify the current map, timetable and any rider alerts before departing.
What published fares say
The official SMRT fare page lists a regular $1.50 fare for a local SMRT ride and $2.00 for a regional route. Seniors age 60 or older, people with qualifying disabilities and Medicare cardholders are listed at $0.75 local and $1.00 regional with appropriate identification. The listed local student fare is $1.25 with valid ID.
These figures are posted fares, not a guarantee for every type of service or after any future rate change. Drivers do not carry change, and the city requires exact fares for cash transactions. Children traveling under the published age/height conditions may ride free with an eligible fare-paying adult; consult the precise city rule rather than assume all students or children ride without a ticket.
Regional connections matter
The city’s transit service description says SMRT operates fixed-route, microtransit and ADA paratransit services. Its regional service extends toward communities including Lompoc, Los Alamos, Buellton, Solvang, Santa Ynez and San Luis Obispo, while some local services reach unincorporated neighborhoods around Santa Maria.
Riders should not assume a regional connection runs hourly simply because one new city route was announced with a 60-minute interval. A trip that crosses several jurisdictions may require particular schedules, a transfer or a reservation for a specialized service.
How to plan an actual journey
Use SMRT’s current Ride Guide, route maps, real-time tracking, alerts and mobile-ticketing links before leaving home. For the latest information, the city lists its transit office at 805-928-5624 and 1303 Fairway Drive, Santa Maria. Offices may have different hours from buses, so check separately.
